Bird Island exercise

(Probably) the longest running KM Experiment in the World!

Bird Island is the single most compelling demonstration of the value of Knowledge Management.

How do you turn sceptics into believers? Simply allow them to experience the value that Knowledge Management can bring.

Knoco’s copyright Bird Island exercise is an amazingly simple, yet extremely effective simulation exercise, that gives people that experience in two short hours. It demonstrates three separate Knowledge Management processes, each of which delivers measurable performance benefit, and includes at least two key moments at which “the pennies drop” for people. Knoco have used this method since 1999, and it has been the most powerful sales tool for Knowledge Management we have ever found. It`s the nearest thing to “Knowledge Management Proof” that you could hope for.

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for beginners—those who are new to Knowledge Management, interested in understanding its foundations, or recently assigned to a KM project or role. No prior experience is required. Class sizes typically range from 6 to 30 participants; this is a 2-hour exercise allowing for discussion and interaction.

Learning objectives

  • Consciously learning and increasing their knowledge in specific and tangible ways does increase performance – often by huge margins
  • Learning processes are not too complex or demanding, but they do require some planning and investment
  • Seeing the best of what has been achieved before will encourage results that they otherwise may have thought impossible
  • There is a tension between collaboration and competition which has implications for organizational culture
