Knowledge Management Surveys (2014–2023)

Since 2014, Knoco Ltd has conducted a global Knowledge Management (KM) survey every three years, with the most recent completed in September 2023. Participation has always been free and confidential, and each respondent receives a complimentary copy of the final survey report.

To date, nearly 1,200 professionals—primarily KM leaders and team members—have contributed to these surveys. The reports provide valuable insights into global KM trends over the past decade. The 2023 report includes 110 graphs and 35 tables of data, allowing comparison across all four surveys. Three of the most significant findings are highlighted below.

Knowledge Management Surveys (2014–2023)

The survey collected a self-assessment of each organization’s Knowledge Management (KM) maturity, with responses ranging from:

  • “We are investigating KM but have not yet started.”
  • “We are in the early stages of introducing KM.”
  • “We are well in progress with KM.”
  • “KM is embedded in the way we work.”

The chart on the right illustrates how KM maturity levels vary by company size. (Click the image to view a larger version.)

Overall, larger organizations tend to be the most mature in their KM practices. Historically, Knowledge Management has been a big-company initiative, but smaller organizations are increasingly adopting and developing KM programs. The exception is the smallest category—many of which are niche consultancies where KM is mission-critical and deeply integrated into daily operations.
